What’s better than a super-fast, simple DIY that stuns you when it’s finished? Nothing.
Here’s a five minute DIY you can make out of things lying around at home gathering dust or busting to be used.
Here’s how to make your own stethoscope.
What you’ll need:
An empty paper towel roll
A plastic bottle
Scissors
Sticky tape or masking tape
How to do it:
Cut the top off of the plastic bottle. This will act as a funnel.
Remove the cap and fit the funnel into the cardboard roll.
Fix it in this position using the tape.
Congratulate yourself! Now you have a homemade stethoscope!
Place the funnel on your friend’s chest (with their consent pls), and listen for their heartbeat! It might take some time to find the right spot but soon you’ll be able to hear the beating of your buddy’s heart.
How it works:
This stethoscope acts a lot like your own ears.
The funnel takes the place of your outermost ear, which is called the pinna. It’s the part of your ear that you would put earrings in. Its job is to funnel sound down your ear canal to your ear drum, which sends vibrations to your brain, enabling you to hear efficiently.
The roll takes the place of your ear canal, and it carries the sound to the end of the tube, where your real ear is, in place of the ear drum.
So what happens with this stethoscope is a lot like your ear. The funnel captures the sound of your friend’s heartbeat and channels it down the cardboard roll to your ear, the same way your ear channels sound towards your brain.
Pretty cool, huh?
